The Sizzling Domain Name Secondary Market
By James Cochrane

I created a site that displays a bunch of dot com domain names that are for sale. What got me into this was I did a bit of research on the domain name secondary market. What I have discovered is that there is huge demand for dot com domains. For instance, at the time of this writing, TopDogRealty.com just sold for $800. How about AntiquesHunter.com? It sold for $250. This is just a couple of the many, many sites being sold as we speak.

You may be thinking that buying a domain for hundreds of dollars seems expensive. But I can assure you that you won't feel that way when they start selling for thousands. And thousands won't seem that crazy when they start selling for tens of thousands. This market is in its early stages but if current trend continues it will heat up.

People are buying up dot coms and sitting on them for investment purposes. They know that a seasoned domain, i.e., one that has been established for a long time will command a markedly better price than a brand new domain name. Google and other search engines value seasoned domains as part of their ranking systems. But just parking a domain could cost the owner some extra money. A domain that gets quality, targeted traffic is worth even more. And one that has a profit generating business is the golden ticket with respect to the price that it gets sold for. This is because it is practically a turnkey operation that the buyer will immediately have the potential to generate sales (or at the very least, capture leads). You can use this knowledge to find domains that have pre-established businesses that actually generate income. You will be much further along the life cycle if you find domains that are full fledged businesses. How much would you pay for that? It could take you years to generate that kind of success from scratch.

Now, you may have noticed that I concentrated this article on dot com domains. Can this work for other dot types like dot org or dot net? Sure, but you have to know that dot coms are the premium sites. Having said that, you probably would be better off with a two syllable dot net than you would with a four syllable dot com. It really depends on who is looking for what and when. But on average dot com domain names are the most sought after.
