The domain name is structured as the subdomain of the nameless DNS root domains. The top level domain name is called (TLD), which includes the generic top level domain (gTLD) like "gov" for government agencies; "edu" for educational institutions; "org" for nonprofit organizations; "mil" for military; "com" for commercial business; and "net" for network organizations; and also the country code top-level domain (ccTLD).

In the hierarchy of DNS, the second next level domains and the third level are usually open for the reservations by the end users, who wish to connect their local area network to the Internet, or even run websites. Usually both these levels of domain names are registered by the domain name registrar.

The Individual host computer uses the domain like host names, which is the leaf or end label in the domain name system and does not have any more subordinate domain names. The hostname appears like a component in the URL for the internet resources like websites.

Those domain registrars, who are accredited by the ICANN, delegates the use of the domain name. An administrative organization, which operates the registry technically services and maintains the TLD and ICANN. The registry is responsible for maintaining the database of the domains registered within the TLD it maintains. Each registrar, who is authorized to assign the names in the corresponding TLD, gives the registration information to the registry for maintaining the records.

For registering the domain and to maintain the requisite authority on the new domain name's space created, the registrars have to use many important key points of information, which are connected to the domain. These are the administrative contacts; the technical contact; the billing contact and the name server.

For delegating it to the user, and maintaining it, the registry and the registrars charge an annual fee. Just remember that registration of the domain names with the registrar confers only exclusive rights of usage and not any legal ownership.
