Domain Names - Discover 4 Proven Tips to Creating a Perfect Domain Name
By James S Alex

In today's society, the internet is becoming a common place for consumer to make regular purchases online. The marketing and sales potential for the internet is quite tremendous. While there are many complications when setting up a website, many fail at what can be the simplest of steps which is simply choosing a fitting domain name.

One - Ensure that your website name has a similarity to your business name. Generic website names such as "gardening dot com" might cost more to obtain than a small unique name related to your gardening business that you can come up with yourself. The reason for this is because when people want to buy gardening tools they don't simply go to "gardening dot com" to do so. As a business you are identifiable and recognizable by your brand name and this should be reflected in the name you choose for your domain. A good example of a small business gardening website could be "TedsTools dot com".

Two - Keep it simple. This means don't mash too many words together (tedssupergardeningtoolsonline) and most definitely do not use hyphens to make your domain name more readable. Hyphens cause a problem as people never remember where they are in the domain name and whether or not you had them in at all. Its a lot easier for someone to remember your domain name if its 3 well chosen words with no hyphens in between.

Three - Use a dot com. The reasoning behind this is simple. The majority of popular websites we access on a daily basis around the world are dot com sites. Why would you not want to follow the leading trend. People are already subconsciously programmed to assume most websites end in dot com. So why make it hard on them. Increase your chances of people remembering your URL by using a dot com over other suffixes such as dot net, dot org and dot info.

Four - Your domain name should suggest to customers the function of your business. Many sites tend to stray from this rule and their domain names often puzzle potential customers who then wont know what they are getting in to before they go to the website itself. Only large and established business can ignore this rule as they already have a recognize trademark for which they are known by. But for small businesses just starting out, this rule is more important to follow.

In summary, when choosing a domain name it is important that it can easily be remembered by the public or those you market it to. It should also be unique so that it stands out between your hungry competitors online.
