Beware of Website Builders Bearing Gifts
By Valerie Olmsted

A friend of mine just found out the hard way that free website help isn't necessarily a good thing. She met a website designer who offered to build her websites for her, for free, and help her get her domains set up. She's pretty cute, and dynamic, so I presume he offered this service to worm his way into her affections. He set up her domains and websites and is hosting her sites as well. What a nice guy, right?

We had lunch the other day; during our conversation she related the facts to me. She was excited and grateful for the help She was paying him what he allowed her to pay. She can well afford it-she's a multimillion dollar realtor becoming an author. Her two current books are poised to be best-sellers, without a doubt, and that's not just my opinion.

She handed him her credit card to buy the domain names from GoDaddy, "but he made a mistake and didn't realize he was in his personal account when he registered them". My eyebrows flew up to the ceiling at that news and I informed her that she needs to get those transferred to her name immediately. She paid him for those domains; they should be hers. Not only that, they are the titles to her books...all of them. My friend sent out the text message to him to do so right away.

The next ploy of this soon-to-be-found-out criminal geek was the text message telling her that "it will take weeks to get the domains transferred". When she found out all it would take is an email and a phone call with the appropriate information, she told him to do it immediately. She also told him she wanted her own hosting service, not to be riding on his. The next text informed her that would cost her a lot of money and he was trying to save her money. My eyebrows almost flew off my face again as I related the major cost of $9.95 a month for unlimited websites hosting and unlimited bandwidth.

When next my friend spoke with the now not so friendly geek, he refused to transfer her domains or websites, citing how he had spent over 20 hours building her websites, which were worth thousands of dollars. You can imagine her devastation when told that he must be a complete doofus if it takes him 20 hours to throw up a couple of pages for two websites, without shopping cart or links.

Obviously, the guy is lying to her and has stolen her domains with the intent of extorting big money from her to get them back. This is not smart business, this is theft. She will be filing a lawsuit if he continues to refuse to cooperate, and also turning in a criminal complaint against him for cyber-crime offenses.

The moral of the story is this: when someone offers to do something similar for you, be careful. They will then control your domains and your websites, effectively putting you in a pretty precarious position should they decide to become extortionists. Sure there's a learning curve, to learn how to do all the necessary parts of website design yourself. But with the free site-builders you can use (albeit they are pretty crappy usually), anybody can build a website in a few hours. At least if you do it all yourself, you control it all. For those who want someone else to do it, be sure you retain control. There are honest web designers out there, just not the one my friend got involved with.
